Vasif Baghirov: “I Believe I Will See the Results of My Hard Work on the Olympic Mat”

Interview with Vasif Baghirov (57 kg), U20 European freestyle wrestling champion:

– How is the preparation for the U20 World Championships going? What percentage ready do you feel for the competition?
– Our preparation is going according to plan. We are having intense training sessions both technically and physically. Every day, I am getting one step closer to my goal.

– Three years ago, you became both U17 European and World Champion. This year, you have the chance to repeat the same result at U20 level. Do you think it will happen? What is needed for that?
– My belief is absolute. Of course, talent alone is not enough for success. It requires great effort and a proper preparation plan. I am currently working on that.

– Who will be your main opponents on the way to the world title?
– Among my opponents, there are several well-known world and European medalists. I will be competing against very strong athletes in this weight class. Each of them has their own strengths. I take all of them equally seriously.

– Do you plan to try yourself in a higher weight class in the future?
– For now, I feel comfortable in 57 kg. I have many goals in this weight class. But in the future, if my body and results allow, I would like to test myself in a higher category as well.

– What qualities are you working on to become stronger?
– With daily training, I am increasing both my strength and speed. I work hard to become more enduring. Most importantly, I am preparing myself psychologically for competition.

– Do you see yourself at the Olympic Games in three years?
– Yes, like every athlete, this is one of my biggest goals. I am preparing very strongly to get there. I believe I will see the results of my hard work on the Olympic mat.
