Two gold and one bronze at the World Championship
Today, the U17 World Beach Wrestling Championship was held in Katerini, Greece.
The prestigious tournament brought together 170 athletes from 26 countries. Under the leadership of head coach Oyan Nazariani, Azerbaijan was represented by 10 wrestlers. Six of them successfully advanced from the group stage to the quarterfinals, with four reaching the semifinals.
In the women’s 55 kg category, Ulviyya Musayeva defeated opponents from Poland in the semifinal and Japan in the final to climb to the top of the podium. With this victory, she became Azerbaijan’s first-ever women’s world champion in beach wrestling, writing her name into history.
Nihad Suleymanli (80 kg) achieved the same success. After overcoming an Iranian wrestler in the semifinal and a Georgian opponent in the final, he secured another gold medal for the national team.
Elgun Karimli (90 kg), who fell just short of the final after losing to an Iranian wrestler, redeemed himself in the bronze medal match by defeating his Moldovan rival 5–0 to claim third place.
Rashad Aliyev (70 kg) also came close to a medal but fell short. He lost to an Iranian opponent in the semifinal and was defeated by a Georgian wrestler in the bronze medal match, finishing in fourth place.
As a result, Azerbaijani wrestlers won two gold and one bronze medal at the championship. The men’s team collected 62 points to finish third in the overall standings. The women’s team, consisting of just two athletes, earned 25 points to share 4th–6th places with Moldova and Puerto Rico.
It should be noted that international referee Sadi Guliyev officiated at the World Championship.
