Two Azerbaijani wrestlers to compete for bronze at the World Championships
The U23 World Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, are nearing their conclusion.
Today, competition began in the men’s freestyle 61 kg, 65 kg, 86 kg, and 97 kg weight categories.
Jeyhun Allahverdiyev (61 kg) started strong with a dominant 16–5 victory over India’s Shubham Shubham but was narrowly defeated 4–6 by Turkey’s Tolga Ozbey in the quarterfinals.
Aykhan Abdullazade (65 kg) earned consecutive wins against Belarus’ Anatoliy Khramika (9–2) and Türkiye’s Abdullah Toprak (7–6) before falling 1–6 to Uzbekistan’s Umidjon Jalalov in the quarterfinals.
Ali Tsokayev (86 kg) confidently overcame Kyrgyzstan’s Mukhammad Abdullayev (10–0) and Japan’s Fumiya Igarashi (8–0), but was defeated 1–7 by Russia’s Arsen Balayan in the quarterfinals.
Zafer Aliyev (97 kg) defeated Armenia’s Sergey Sargsyan 6–5 but lost by fall to Russia’s Soslan Chakaev in the round of 16.
Aykhan Abdullazade and Ali Tsokayev will compete in the repechage round tomorrow for a chance to fight for bronze.
