Taleh Israfilov: “We Outperformed All European Countries”
August 1, 2025
The Greco-Roman wrestling team, which won a set of medals at the U17 World Championships held in Athens, Greece, has returned home.
A welcoming ceremony was held at Heydar Aliyev International Airport to greet the national team.
Taleh Israfilov, Head Coach:
“It was a solid tournament. We outperformed all European countries, even though we had placed third in the team standings at the European Championships. This time, Asian countries showed stronger performances. We shared 4th–5th places with Kyrgyzstan. I would like to express my gratitude to the leadership of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their support. The CIS Games are ahead of us, and we’ll discuss future plans with the leadership after that competition.”
Ali Nazarov, World Champion:
“The tournament went really well. Everything turned out just as I hoped. I want to thank everyone who supported me and contributed to my success. I’m especially grateful to my personal coach, Azer Huseynov, and the entire coaching staff. When I reached the final, I was focused on nothing but victory. I wanted to become a world champion — and thank God, I achieved that.”
Hikmat Hagverdiyev, World Silver Medalist:
“I went there to become the champion, but ended up taking second place. I’m still grateful. I could have taken gold. I gave it my all in the final, but had to settle for silver. I dedicate this medal to everyone who contributed to my journey.”
Abdurrahman Huseynli, World Bronze Medalist:
“We prepared very well for this tournament. We’re thankful to the federation’s leadership for the conditions they created. I also want to thank the national team’s coaching staff and Rafiq Huseynov, who accompanied us during the event. I’m satisfied with my result, though I went there with the goal of becoming world champion. Due to some technical mistakes, I couldn’t reach the final. God willing, I’ll work on those mistakes and turn this bronze into gold.”
