Our national team becomes European Champion for the 6th time

The European Wrestling Championships held in Tirana, the capital of Albania, have officially concluded.

After the Greco-Roman wrestling team, our freestyle wrestling national team also conquered the top of Europe. With 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal, our team collected a total of 152 points and became European champion for the 6th time. Our team finished 58 points ahead of second-placed Georgia. Armenia took third place with 73 points.

Previously, Azerbaijan had achieved the title of strongest nation in this discipline in 2009, 2017, 2022, 2023, and 2025.

Our team achieved its best result of the last 17 years in terms of medal quality in Albania. The total of 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal is the best performance in freestyle wrestling at the European Championships since 2009.

As a reminder, in Tirana, Islam Bazarganov (57 kg), Ali Tsokayev (92 kg), and Giorgi Meshvildishvili (125 kg) became European champions. Turan Bayramov (74 kg) and Arseniy Djioyev (86 kg) won silver medals, while Jabrayil Hajiyev (79 kg) earned a bronze medal.

Thus, as in 2022 and 2025, Azerbaijan achieved a “golden double” by becoming European team champions in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.
