General assembly of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation held

The General Assembly of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation (AWF) has been held. The event was attended by AWF President Mikayil Jabbarov, Vice President Namig Aliyev, Executive Committee members Namig Abdullayev, Farid Mansurov, Vasif Mammadov, First Vice President of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade, Head of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Elnur Mammadov, as well as members of the federation.

The meeting was organized to discuss the federation’s activities over the past four years, upcoming work in the field of wrestling, and to hold elections to the Executive Committee.

At the assembly, AWF President Mikayil Jabbarov highlighted the efforts undertaken under the leadership of the head of state to develop sports in Azerbaijan, including wrestling, the nurturing of young talents, and further increasing the professionalism and international achievements of Azerbaijani athletes.

After confirming the quorum, members of the mandate commission and the General Assembly were approved. Afterwards, the report of AWF Secretary General Parvin Piriyev was presented.

Parvin Piriyev spoke about the work carried out and the results achieved over the past four years. The secretary general noted that during this period, the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Cup, the European Olympic Qualification Tournament for Paris 2024, and the U23 European Championships were successfully hosted in Baku. He reported that Azerbaijani athletes won 1,031 medals in various international competitions between 2022 and 2025 — 293 gold, 292 silver, and 446 bronze. National teams across various age groups repeatedly ranked among the top three at European and world championships. Azerbaijan’s Greco-Roman wrestlers claimed the title of the world’s strongest team in both 2023 and 2024.

A number of infrastructure projects have been implemented to strengthen the material and technical base for wrestling. Additionally, extensive promotional efforts have been carried out to increase mass participation. Masterclasses with titled wrestlers and nationwide seminars to improve coaches’ knowledge and skills were organized. Special attention was given to the development of wrestling among younger age groups to build a strong foundation for the sport, which contributed to significant successes in the U15 and U17 categories.

During the event, a vote was held for the presidency of the AWF. Mikayil Jabbarov was re-elected president for the next four years. United World Wrestling (UWW) Bureau member Namig Aliyev was also re-elected as vice president. The members of the Executive Committee were chosen through voting: Mikayil Jabbarov, Namig Aliyev, Namig Abdullayev, Farid Mansurov, Vasif Mammadov.

Chingiz Huseynzade and Elnur Mammadov delivered speeches highlighting the projects implemented for the development of sports in the country and the opportunities created to ensure international success for athletes.

In his closing remarks, Mikayil Jabbarov outlined the priorities and areas of activity for the next four years and wished the wrestlers new achievements in training and competition.
