Elmir Aliyev becomes world champion, sets national record
The U23 World Championships continue in Novi Sad, Serbia
Today, two more Azerbaijani wrestlers reached the podium at the U23 World Championships.
In the 55 kg category, Elmir Aliyev faced Alibek Amirov (Russia) in the final. Aliyev avenged his semifinal loss to the same opponent at the U23 European Championships, winning 3–2. With this victory, Elmir became a world champion for the first time in his career.
Another victory came from Ruslan Nurullayev (72 kg). In the repechage round, he defeated Oleg Khalilov (Ukraine) 3–1, and then won the bronze-medal bout against Gaspar Terteryan (Armenia) with the same score.
With one day remaining in the Greco-Roman competition, the Azerbaijani team set a new record in medal achievements, earning two gold medals for the first time at the U23 World Championships. Yesterday, Ziya Babashov (63 kg) also climbed to the top of the podium.
