Bronze medal chance for Osman and Jabrayil at World Championships

The World Wrestling Championships continue in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.

On the second day, finalists were determined in four more freestyle weight categories.

At 57 kg, Islam Bazarganov defeated Georgia’s Roberti Dingashvili 10:1 but lost 0:3 in the Round of 16 to Russia’s Musa Mekhtikhanov.

At 74 kg, Turan Bayramov fell short against Russia’s Olympic and world champion Zaurbek Sidakov in the Round of 32, losing 1:5.

At 79 kg, Jabrayil Hajiyev advanced to the Round of 16 after Sierra Leone’s Alfred Daniel did not take to the mat. He then defeated Slovakia’s Akhsarbek Gulaev 2:1, but in the quarterfinals lost 0:8 to Greece’s European champion Georgios Kougioumtsidis. As his opponent advanced to the final, Hajiyev will enter the repechage tomorrow.

At 92 kg, Osman Nurmagomedov opened with a narrow 4:3 win over India’s Deepak Punia. In the quarterfinals, he faced Greece’s Olympic medalist and three-time European champion Dauren Kurugliev. While leading 2:0, Kurugliev suffered an injury, allowing Nurmagomedov to advance to the semifinals. In the last four, he was defeated 4:15 by American Trent Hidlay. Nurmagomedov will wrestle for the bronze medal tomorrow.
