Bronze Medal Chance for Gunay Gurbanova at World Championships

The U20 World Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria, continue.

On the third day of competition, two Azerbaijani freestyle wrestlers and one women’s wrestler took to the mat.

In the 61 kg category, Farhad Hajiyev was eliminated in the round of 16 after a 0-11 defeat to Kazakhstan’s Allan Oralbek, while Tabriz Bayramov (86 kg) suffered the same fate, falling 0-10 to India’s Mukul Dahiya.

Competing in the women’s 59 kg division, Gunay Gurbanova opened her debut with a convincing 6-0 victory over Egypt’s Rahma Bediwi. She then overpowered Lithuania’s Anna Tieliegina by technical superiority (12-2) to advance to the semifinals. In a tense battle against Sweden’s Karin Samuelsson, Gurbanova lost her advantage in the final seconds due to a penalty and was edged out 7-8.

As a result, Gurbanova will wrestle for bronze tomorrow.
