1 silver, 2 bronze medals at the Memorial

A memorial tournament in honor of three-time Olympic champion Alexander Medved in freestyle wrestling was held in Minsk, the capital of Belarus.

The competition, which started on February 13, concluded today. Our country was represented at the memorial by 7 wrestlers under the leadership of coach Ashraf Aliyev. The national team members won 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Turan Bayramov and Gadzhimurad Omarov competed in the 74 kg category. Bayramov, who competed for the first time after the Olympics, advanced to the semifinals with 8:0 victories over Belarusian Nikita Dmitriyev and Kazakh Erbarys Satybald, while Omarov defeated Belarusian Yegor Akulinich (6:3) with Russian Imam Ganishov (6:1). Turan lost to Russian Inalbek Sheriyev 2:5 on the verge of the final, while Gadzhimurad defeated Turkish Fazli Eryilmaz – 6:3. Bayramov won the bronze medal by defeating Russian Kantemir Senova 3:2. Omarov lost to Sheriyev in the final (3:11) and took the silver medal.

Shamil Zubairov (92 kg) lost to Russian Mustafagadzhi Malachdibirov 4:6 in the 1/8 finals, but defeated Belarusian Artyom Ignatyuk (13:1) in the consolation match and Russian Abdulla Gamzatov (4:3) in the bronze medal match to rise to the third step of the podium.

Afgan Khashalov (57 kg), Musa Aghayev (65 kg), Timur Gulmagomedov (86 kg) and Islam Ilyasov (97 kg) finished the competition without medals.
