Isfahan Hasanov reaches world championship final

The U17 World Wrestling Championships got underway today.

On the opening day of the competition, held at the National Gymnastics Arena, the finalists in the Greco-Roman wrestling events at 48, 55, 65, 80 and 110 kg were determined.

Omar Salmanov (48 kg) defeated India’s Avinash Chetake 6-1 before pinning Iran’s Ali Morteza Leyvesi. However, he lost 1-3 to Russia’s Sultan Yusupov in the semifinals. Omar will wrestle for the bronze medal tomorrow.

Although Gurban Majnunov (55 kg) eliminated Kyrgyzstan’s Alikhan Minazarov by technical superiority (9-1), he lost to India’s Hariom Harioma in the Round of 16 on criteria after a 3-3 draw.

Orkhan Habibli (65 kg) reached the semifinals with technical superiority victories over Czech Republic’s Gaspar Sanchez (8-0), Romania’s Gabriel Lungu (9-18) and Uzbekistan’s Sardar Makhmudov (9-0). However, one step away from the final, Orkhan lost 3-4 to Ibrahim Nasibov, an Azerbaijani-born wrestler representing Ukraine. He will compete for the bronze medal tomorrow.

Isfahan Hasanov (80 kg) opened his campaign with a convincing 6-0 victory over Croatia’s Toma Jelens before defeating Poland’s Szymon Treder on criteria after a 1-1 draw. Hasanov then defeated Türkiye’s Abdulhalik Bal 5-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he beat Lithuania’s Benediktas Bubelevicius 4-2 to become the first Azerbaijani wrestler to reach the final at the U17 World Championships. He will face Iran’s Alireza Rezaei in tomorrow’s final.
