Bronze medal opportunity for Ilkin Gurbanov
The U23 World Championships Continue in Novi Sad, Serbia
The U23 World Championships in Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling are underway in Novi Sad, Serbia.
On the third day of competition, three Azerbaijani wrestlers entered the fray.
Greco-Roman Wrestling
In the 60 kg category, Ilkin Gurbanov defeated Dimitri Khachidze (Georgia) 3–2 and Georgios Skarpellos (Germany) 5–3 to advance to the quarterfinals. However, he was beaten 1–7 by Sajjad Abbaspourraghni (Iran) in that round. Since the Iranian wrestler reached the final, Gurbanov will compete in the repechage round tomorrow for a chance at the bronze medal.
In the 82 kg division, Elmin Aliyev recorded a dominant 9–0 victory over Dominik Csucsu (Hungary) in the qualification round but fell 3–5 to Alperen Berber (Türkiye) in the Round of 16.
Women’s Wrestling
In the 50 kg category, Asmar Jankurtaran lost 0–10 to Natalia Pudova (Russia) in the qualification round.
