Abilfat Mammadov: “It is difficult to make predictions in this age group”

Interview with Abilfat Mammadov, Head Coach of the U15 Greco-Roman Wrestling National Team

-Were the results of the national championship held in Ganja surprising for you?

-The Azerbaijan Championship went as expected. In 9 out of 10 weight categories, wrestlers who regularly participate in the national team’s training process advanced to the finals. The medalists have been included in the national squad.

-What were your impressions of the Gymnasiade you participated in last month?

-We performed well in Serbia. I consider the results satisfactory. We won 3 gold and 2 silver medals. Most importantly, 9 out of 10 athletes secured a podium finish.

-How are you preparing for the European Championship in Italy next month?

-With one month left until the competition, we’ll shift to intensive training. Starting May 26, we’ll begin general physical preparation. Ten days before the championship, we’ll focus on tactical and technical training. All of this will take place in Baku.

-Which countries’ teams do you see as the main rivals, and what’s your prediction for the competition?

-Alongside us, Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Armenia, and Hungary are considered the favorite teams. I can’t specify who I expect medals from or how many we’ll win, as for most of our athletes, this will be their first major competition. Let’s say they’re taking their first step. The U15 age group is the most challenging, so it’s hard to give an exact prediction. With God’s help, I believe we’ll perform well.
