Women's wrestling

The principles of gender equality are of great importance in modern sports. Based on these principles, women’s wrestling was created towards the end of the 20th century. Women’s wrestling was established according to the rules of freestyle wrestling. The only difference is in the weight classes.

The first world championship in this type of wrestling was held in Norway in 1987. A year later, the first European women’s championship took place in France. Since 2004, this type of wrestling, which countries like Japan, USA, Russia and Ukraine are more ambitious, has been included in the program of the Olympic Games. At the Athens, Beijing and London Olympics, women’s wrestling was fought in 4 weight categories. Then, based on the principle of gender equality, the International Olympic Committee decided to represent all 3 types of wrestling at the Olympic Games in the same number – 6 weights.
